Parameters[edit]

All parameters are optional.

name: name of software (see Latest versions in separate templates section for details)
logo: logo
screenshot: screenshot image
caption: caption for screenshot
slogan: software's (official) slogan
collapsible: can be set to "yes" in case of long vertical screenshot (see QQ for example)
author: original author of the program
developer: current developer of the program
released: the release date of version 1.0 (or closely-matching release). For subsequent or prior releases, use latest release date.
Can use {{Start date}} template.
discontinued: whether this product is no longer being developed (changes the words 'Latest release' to 'discontinued'). Any value will do, though 'yes' or 'true' are preferred for clarity. Use the last release version and date in the 'latest release' parameters, below.
latest release version: latest released version number
latest release date: release date of the latest released version; suggested use of {{Start date and age}} template
latest preview version: version number of preview version or development branch
latest preview date: preview date; suggested use of {{Start date and age}} template
programming language: programming language
operating system: operating system. For Unix-like multi-OS programs use: Any Unix-like
included with: names of the operating system or devices that come with this browser built-in
engine: engine that runs the software
platform: platform (Java, .NET). For multi-platform programs use: Cross-platform
size: in megabytes
language: natural language (English, French)
status: Should probably be one of: Planned, Active, Unmaintained
genre: Type of program. Probably wikilinked to an article such as Geographic information system.
license: License such as proprietary, [[GNU General Public License|GPL]]. Pick either license (American English) or licence (Commonwealth English), not both - select the one which matches the content of the article the template is used in.
website: Web site of software package.

Latest versions in separate templates[edit]

Infobox retrieves the software product's latest release version, latest release date, latest preview version and latest preview date from outside the article. Users visiting the article may click the numbers directly in the infobox to edit that external source. This mode is very useful for articles about software products whose vendors keep releasing updates or newer versions. With this mode is enabled, users can quickly and effectively edit the release data without editing the article proper (and cluttering its edit history with inconsequential edits).

To make the infobox retrieve release data from outside the article:

Create an external source that supplies data for latest stable release. To do so:
1. Copy and paste the following URL into your browser's address bar, replacing INFOBOX_NAME with the value supplied in name parameter of the infobox:
  https://www.ifixwiki.com/index.php?title=Template:Latest_stable_software_release/INFOBOX_NAME&action=edit&preload=Template:LSR/syntax
2. In the page that opens, fill in the required information.
3. Save the page.
Create an external source that supplies data for latest preview release. To do so:
1. Copy and paste the following URL into your browser's address bar, replacing INFOBOX_NAME with the value suppplied in name parameter of the infobox:
  https://www.ifixwiki.com/index.php?title=Template:Latest_preview_software_release/INFOBOX_NAME&action=edit&preload=Template:LPR/syntax
2. In the page that opens, fill in the required information.
3. Save the page.
In the main article delete any latest release version, latest release date, latest preview version or latest preview date parameters (otherwise they will take precedence over templates' data).
Save the article.
Refresh the article.

The same templates may be shared between related articles. To do so, specify the subpage name of the templates' versions in the infobox's parameter |name= and add |title=subject of the article parameter to make the infobox display the proper name in the article.

This infobox is just an example, and it isn't supposed to reflect the present state of this particular piece of software, or even make any sense. It is only shown to demonstrate the effect of the options.
